The biggest mistake  people make when it comes to believing God for something, or as we commonly hear it referred to, ” having faith for something”, is that we tend to have the need to see it, before we can believe it. We live in a society that has created people who need proof of things. The world that we live in is full of corruption, lying, false information, and deceitful business practices. Because of this, we have become conditioned to need proof, or to be able to physically see something before we will accept the reality of it.

In the Bible in Hebrews 11:1. it says “Now Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” The key word that we often overlook in that scripture is the very first word… In order for faith to be faith it can not be postponed or dependent on anything other than itself, otherwise it isn’t really faith. Faith has to be NOW! Allow me to share with you a simple illustration that will help to explain the principles of how faith should work.

Do you remember the very first time you ever made a cake using a boxed cake mix? Before you made a cake for the first time yourself, you had never experienced the creation of a cake personally from start to finish. When you started the process, you gathered all the necessary ingredients that were required to make the cake. These items included the boxed cake mix, a few eggs, water, and oil.  You found a mixing bowel to mix all the ingredients together. Now, since  up to that time you had never experienced making a cake, and never had the satisfaction of seeing your work from start to finish pay off in a cake, you had to trust or “have faith” that when you mixed the ingredients together, poured them into a cake pan, and baked it, that it would result in a cake.

Let’s look at Hebrews 1:1 in the Bible again. In this verse we are told ” Now faith is the substance of things hoped for..” Back on that day when you made a cake the for very first time, you gathered together the  ” SUBSTANCE ” of what you were hoping for. The ingredients; the cake mix, the oil, the water, and the eggs represented the “SUBSTANCE” of what you were hoping for, which of course was a beautiful tasty cake.  The ingredients were not the cake itself, only the substance of it. You had to mix the substance together and trust and have FAITH that after you baked it that you would have a cake. If at that time you really didn’t believe that doing all that work would have resulted in a cake, you would never have started the process to begin with. If we look again at the verse out of Hebrews, it continues by saying ” Faith is the substance of things hoped for, THE EVIDENCE OF THINGS NOT SEEN.  Before you baked your first cake, you didn’t have any evidence, or proof of a cake. You only had a trust and belief that when you mixed the SUBSTANCE and baked it, that it would result in a cake. After mixing and baking the ingredients in a pan, you were not expecting a cake in a week, a month, or a year. You were expecting a cake right then and there. You were exercising NOW FAITH.

Now let’s think about the situations that we face in our lives. All of us have prayers we need answered, things we are believing God for, and dreams that we would like to see materialize in our lives. Just like the ingredients or the “SUBSTANCE” of your first cake, the ” SUBSTANCE” of the answers to your prayers is available to everyone!  The substance is the word of God, which is the Bible.  If we mix the ” SUBSTANCE” together with a trust or faith that it will bring to reality what we are asking for and have need of in our lives, we will live the blessed life that God intends for us to live. In Hebrews chapter 4, we are told that the Israelites had the word of God, or the “SUBSTANCE“, but because they didn’t mix it with faith, it was of no benefit to them. If you would have gathered all the ingredients together for your cake, and never mixed them together, you would have never baked your first cake. And just like when we make a cake, we can not expect to see the cake before we mix the ingredients and bake them. You don’t see a cake when you start the process of making one, but you know that the end result will indeed be a cake. There are promises after promises in the Bible that are ours to use to mix with faith in order to “get our cake” so to speak.

One thing that we must never forget is that we have to believe for the results before we actually see them. If we have to see  the EVIDENCE first before we believe, then we are not operating in faith. It doesn’t require faith to believe in something that you can actually see, touch or taste. But faith has nothing to do with our senses. You can not live a victorious life depending on your senses or your feelings!

There is a story in the Bible that tells about a time that Jesus appeared to his disciples after his death and resurrection. When he appeared to them, one of the disciples whose name was Thomas was not present. When the rest of the disciples told Thomas about what happened to them and about seeing Jesus, Thomas didn’t believe it. He told the other disciples “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” A week later the disciples were all together in a house, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”  Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” After Thomas did what Jesus asked him to do he said, “My Lord and my God!”  Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”  If you want to be happy in life, you can’t walk in a  “Thomas” type of faith. For faith to be real faith, you have to believe that your prayers and dreams are going to materialize before you actually see the signs of it. Just because you can’t see oxygen, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist. Without it, you would not be alive.

If you really want to live a happy life, and want to see your dreams and goals fulfilled, then get out the “substance” ( The Bible) , mix it with faith, and you will be amazed at what God will do in your life!
