Reaching Out Three Types of Reaching Everyone Must Do

Can you remember times in your life that you were reaching for an object that was at a height or a distance from you that was just out of your reach? Being only five foot eight inches tall, I’m relatively short for a man, so I have often encountered the frustrations of being “vertically challenged.” I can think of several times at grocery stores there being an item that was pushed toward the back of the very top shelf that I could barely get my fingertips on. Because of where the item was situated on the shelf, I could feel it with my fingertips, but was unable to get the item in my grasp. Oh, the frustrations that sometimes accompany being short!

I can compare my top shelf grocery shopping challenges very easily to everyday life. I think sometimes in life, there are dreams, goals, and aspirations that we have in life that we so very strongly want to achieve, yet they seem to be just out of our grasp. We often want them so badly, that just like the item on the top shelf at the grocery, we can feel them with the “fingertips” of our minds and hearts, but are unable to make possession of them a reality. A successful life is always going to involve continuous reaching. In order to be successful in life, we always have to continue to press forward, and strive for improvement, often reaching for things that at first glance may seem beyond our reach. The dreams that you have and the goals that you want to achieve in your life will almost never simply fall into your hands. Fulfilling our dreams and attaining our goals requires us to stretch ourselves and reach with all of our might. Reaching is and always will be a part of life.

In life we have to stretch and reach out socially, mentally, and spiritually if we are going to live the successful life that God has intended for us. There are three types of reaching that every one of us should consistently do if we want to see our dreams fulfilled and our goals reached. Let’s consider each type of reaching individually.

We have to reach out socially: None of us are an island. A large part of success in life involves how we interact and relate with others. No matter how educated or skilled we think we have become, there are always going to be things in life that we can learn from someone else. If we fail to reach out and open ourselves up to others, we often miss some of the most valuable lessons in life. Also, sometimes we tend to get so caught up in our own struggles, problems, and situations that have us stressed out, that we fail to recognize the fact that there are others that are facing much larger problems than we are. In comparison to the problems others face, we are often much more blessed than we realize. I have always said that if you want to see your dreams fulfilled, one of the best ways to do it is to help someone else fulfill theirs. What you give you will always get back. If you give encouragement, you will get encouragement back. Whatever you sow, you will reap.

We have to reach out mentally: There are times in life when we have to take a moment, shake ourselves, and reset our focus. Sometimes the struggles and stress we face in life have a tendency to cause us to lose focus of our dreams and goals, and we end up wading in a pool of hopelessness and despair. Have you ever heard the expression, especially in the area of sports, “digging down deep”? When an athlete is in the heat of competition and it looks like he or she is facing defeat, it is then that they have to “dig down deep” within themselves mentally, and determine in their mind that they are going to accomplish what they set out to do, which is to win. We at times have to do the same thing. Much of the success in life is not determined by the amount of problems or challenges that we face, but success is determined by our response to life’s challenges and our attitude. There is a winner down deep inside all of us, but sometimes we have to reach deep down in the recesses of our heart and mind, and unleash that winning mentality that lies dormant inside us. Sometime we have to reach out mentally by “thinking outside the box.” Like the old saying says, “ Where there is a will, there is a way.”

We have to reach out spiritually. Lastly, but actually most importantly, we have to reach out to God. I firmly believe that there is a God in Heaven, the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth that is able to see us through and help us in the midst of any crisis that life may throw our way. Too many times people make the mistake of putting themselves through years of stress and turmoil trying to deal with all their problems on their own, only to cry out to God for help when they can’t take it anymore. God is there to hear us and help us at whatever point in life we call out to him, but we should always place every situation that we face in his hands first! I urge you to not attempt to work out all of your problems on your own! God’s wisdom far exceeds the wisdom of mankind, and He knows what is best for us. There is a God that loves us and wants us to be successful in life, but we have to place our faith and trust in Him. In the Bible in Psalms 37:4-5, it says, “Take delight in the Lord, And He will give you your heart’s desires. Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust in Him and He will help you.” In my own experience in life, I have found this scripture to be true over and over again. If we simply reach out to God, and allow him to take the steering wheel of our life, He will lead us down the paths that are best for us.

So there you have it… the three ways that all of us must reach out in order to live the fulfilled life that we were meant to live. Never stop reaching out to others. Never stop reaching deep within yourself to unleash the positive attitude and the winner that resides deep inside you. Never stop reaching out to God! He loves you, and wants to bless you and help you achieve your dreams! The Bible says in Psalms 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, and ever-present help in trouble.”

Until next time,

Mark
