God was the AUTHOR of the entire Bible. In most books that you will ever read, there is normally a section either in the back or the front that is an “ABOUT THE AUTHOR” section. In this section, it will tell you about the author, his credentials, and his characteristics. It simply gives you some insight to the Author as a person. Well, I would like to share the “ABOUT THE AUTHOR” section with you so that you can find out about the credentials and the characteristics of the Bible’s Author…which of course is GOD. The Bible has much to say ABOUT the AUTHOR.
When God created man, HE created him in his own image and likeness. (Genesis 1:26) In many ways, man is like God; God is a spirit. John 4:24 tells us “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” God is a Spirit. Grab hold of that. This means all human beings are first and foremost spirits, not bodies. On the inside of every living human body there is a human spirit. That is the real person, the one created in the image of God. Your body is not the REAL you, it is only the house or shell that your spirit lives in. It is through the spirit of man that God communicates with him or her. God does not communicate with humans through their souls because He does not live in the soul realm. God does not communicate with humans through their bodies because He does not live in the physical realm. God is a Spirit and He lives in the spirit realm. This is why He communicates with humans through their human spirits. God is a Spirit; therefore, man is a spirit. The spirit of man – the real person, departs the body and heads for Heaven or Hell at the moment of death.
But, there are some attributes and qualities that belong ONLY to God, and define who HE is. We all know that God created the Heavens and the earth. Before ANYTHING existed, He was there. John 1:1-3 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.”
Some of God’s Characteristics
1. God is Omnipotent– This means that God is all powerful. The word omnipotent is derived from two words; the word omni is derived from the Latin word omnis, which means all or universally, and the word potent which means powerful. So put together, it means all powerful. After Christ (who was God in the flesh) was crucified, and resurrected, He appeared to his disciples. When he gave them The Great Commission in Matthew 28:18 it says, And Jesus spake Unto them saying “All power is given unto me in Heaven and in Earth” Do you remember the story about when the disciples were on a ship at sea, and Jesus was asleep? (Matthew 8: 23-27). A violent storm arose and the disciples became afraid they were going to die. Christ woke up and asked them “Oh Ye of little faith, why are you afraid?” Then He rebuked the winds and the waves an there were a great calm. The disciples were amazed and asked “What manner of man is this that even the winds and the waves obey Him?” Again, remember, Christ was GOD in the flesh, so HE also was ALL Powerful. Has God ever calmed a storm in your life? He still is in the storm calming business!
God is ALL POWERFUL, so HE can do whatever He wills, but He will NEVER go against His divine nature. Because of that there are SOME things God CAN NOT do. Titus 1:2 tells us that God can not lie. See also Numbers 23:19. Jesus just like his Father could not lie, He said in John 14:6 “I am the way the TRUTH, and the life.” Another thing He CAN NOT do is deny Himself. 2nd Timothy 2:13 says “If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.”
2. God is Omnipresent– This means that HE is everywhere at the same time. The Psalmist David said there was nowhere he could go that God wasn’t there! Psalms 139:7-12 says, Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.
Aren’t you glad that no matter where you go, God is there with you? You don’t have to be in a church to reach God. You can reach him at work, in the car, at home, .etc etc. He is EVERYWHERE!
3. God is Omniscient– This means God is all knowing. David said in Psalms 139:1-3, “O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.” There is nothing in us or about us that God doesn’t know. He knows us better than we know ourselves. Hebrews 4:13 says,” Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”
So, there you have it! God has some AWESOME credentials! Seriously….think about his credentials for a moment, and think about what terrific news that is for us! He is omnipotent, or all powerful, so there is NOTHING He can’t do for us! He is omnipresent, so no matter where we go, He is there. God is everywhere at all times. He will be there with us through our good times, and He will be there with us through our bad times as well. And lastly, He is omniscient, meaning he is all knowing, or He knows EVERYTHING! He knows all about us and He knows every heartache we have and every problem we are facing. He knows all about our problems we are going to face before we do! God never promised that He would take us around our problems, but He did promise that He would be there with us through our problems.
