In Pursuit of Financial Peace…Learning to Break Free of Debt

We all want a life that is full of peace. Nobody wants their life to be characterized by turmoil, stress, and discouragement. I think it is safe to say that just about everyone wants to have a peaceful and stable life. One of the greatest types of peace is financial peace.  Over the years, a lesson that my wife and I learned the hard way was that one of the most destructive forces that will ever come against your pursuit of a peaceful life is financial problems and debt. One of the biggest causes of depression and marital problems in America today is debt. You can have a successful career, a loving family, a huge circle of friends, and even have a great balance in your spiritual life, and still have a life of turmoil and distress because of debt. I would like to stress here that having a right relationship with God is absolutely the most important key to a life of inner peace. I’m so very thankful that my wife and I both are members of a wonderful church, and have both been born-again Christians for many years. We feel like we owe our entire life to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Without God, and the gift of His son Jesus, we are nothing. Even though we have had the inner peace of God that passes all understanding for many years, it wasn’t until a few years ago that we discovered that we would never have the fullness of peace that God wanted us to have until we learned to put God first in our money. This involved changing our entire perspective on how we managed our finances. At one time, we were drowning in debt. At the very worst point of our financial struggles, we decided that enough was enough. We knew we had to change. That’s when we made the decision to start implementing the financial principles taught by financial expert Dave Ramsey. That was one of the best decisions we ever made.

The primary reason that we chose to apply the methods of debt elimination that Dave Ramsey teaches is the fact that Dave Ramsey himself is a very devout born-again Christian. Because Dave is a Christian, he not only offers great financial advice, but he also delivers it from a biblical perspective. In 2013, my wife and I were very fortunate to be involved in a 9 week Dave Ramsey seminar called Financial Peace University that was offered by our church. This experience and the things we learned about money management and debt helped us to eliminate a huge amount of personal debt. We are currently down to nothing but a mortgage payment, which we hope to eliminate in the next three to four years. If you have never heard of Financial Peace University, or have heard of it and never checked it out, I encourage you to take a look at it! If you are in a financial state of chaos like we were, it could change your life! Below is a video that gives you a little taste of what Financial Peace University is all about.

Earlier this year, my wife and I had the distinct privilege and honor to be the facilitators for the Financial Peace University course that was offered by our church.  It was rewarding for us to have the opportunity to help deliver the information to others that we ourselves found to be so crucial in our journey toward eliminating debt from our lives. Debt will keep you in a self imposed prison that will prevent you from ever having real peace in your life. Part of having a life of peace comes from having financial peace.
