It is easy to get so busy in the hustle and bustle of life, that we often don’t take the time to truly realize how blessed we really are. The daily grind and stresses of everyday life, and the pressures that go along with it all, tend to sometimes cause us to fail to see all the blessings that we have in our lives. If we allow it to, stress has a way of causing us to accentuate the negative and focus less on the positive.
Much of our success and happiness in life is related to our thoughts and what we focus on. If we spend our lives focusing on the negative things we see around us, and the things in life we are not happy about, we will drag our feet through life depressed and unhappy. Dwelling on the negative will keep you from achieving success and reaching your dreams because in your mind you will always be manufacturing reasons why you think you will fail. Consequently, people who focus on the negative, because of fear of failure, put off their dreams. They say to themselves, “When things are better, I’ll do it.” The sad truth is…that day never comes. Mark Victor Hansen was quoted as saying, “Don’t wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles, and less than perfect conditions. So What! Get started now! With each step you take you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident, and more and more successful.”
There are always positive things in our lives, and things to be truly thankful for. Our challenge is to continually choose to focus on those things, rather than the things in our lives that cause us turmoil and stress. So many people go through life creating a set of conditions that have to fall into place before they will be happy. The problem with that way of thinking is that as some of the conditions begin to materialize, new conditions are added, so the destination we consider to be “happiness” is never reached. Happiness is a choice. It is not a destination. It is a conscious decision to be happy regardless of our circumstances. That is not to say that we should just settle, and decide that we are happy and not desire to better ourselves. We simply must decide that regardless of outside disturbances, turmoil, and situations, we are going to focus on the things in our lives that bring us happiness and joy. I have found in my own experiences that when I dwell on the good things, and the things that make me smile, my day goes so much better, and I am more focused. It is only when we can avoid the distractions of negative thinking that we can truly experience happiness and success. It was once said that if a person could change their thoughts, they could change their life.
In the Bible, in Philippians chapter 4, the Apostle Paul said, “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” ( New Living Translation) I think that is awesome advice. Even though those words were recorded nearly two thousand years ago, the wisdom in Paul’s words still hold true today. If we want to attain a life of true happiness and fulfillment, it all begins with what we choose to think about. Remember, nobody has the power to choose your thoughts for you. That power is yours alone. As you choose your thoughts, you choose your degree of happiness and success.
