Don’t Underestimate The Power Of Your Legacy

What type of legacy are you creating?

These days the word legacy is seldom a topic of discussion. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines legacy as “something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor.” A legacy is a story and set of values which characterizes a person’s life. Everyone alive today is creating a legacy. Whether you realize it or not, you are creating  your own legacy. Choices you make, actions you take, and the attitudes you embrace determine the legacy you will create. How you impact your friends, loved ones, and those you come into contact with determines the legacy you will leave to them.

Unfortunately, today’s society promotes instant gratification and a “live for today” mentality. People often become so engaged in chasing the situations in life they desire, they forget the legacy they are creating. Often choices people make are poor ones that sabotage their God-given destiny and purpose in life. God has a specific plan and purpose for everyone’s life, but a person’s  choices often ignore the plan God has for them. Countless numbers of people have left behind legacies of negativity, selfishness, abuse, addiction, and immorality. The poor choices and lack of wisdom that characterize the lives of such people inflict long lasting emotional scars that continue to affect their families long after they are gone.

God wants you to inspire others.

I believe God wants you to live a prosperous life that is full of joy. Jesus said in John 10:10, “The thief’s (referring to Satan) purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life” (New Living Translation) It’s clear from this scripture Jesus didn’t only come to save us from our sins. Jesus came to restore mankind’s broken relationship with God. By doing so, Jesus not only redeemed us, he gave us the ability to possess true joy. That true joy comes only through a relationship with God.

God wants you to have a great life, but he also wants you to use your life to help, encourage, and inspire others. How you live your life not only affects you, but it also affects those around you. Your life continually speaks a message to your friends and family. What message do you want to project to them? As the saying goes, actions speak louder than words.

Your legacy can affect future generations!

Some people think of a legacy as leaving material possessions, money, or an inheritance to future generations. Actually, when you die, it is not what you leave to others that matters, but rather what you leave in them. I can’t express strongly enough how important it is to leave a great legacy. A great legacy imparts wisdom, Godly principles, and important values to future generations.

The world has become a violent, corrupt, and faith-testing place in which to live. The inspiration and wisdom from a great legacy gives your friends and family a great example to follow. A great legacy leaves behind valuable truths and lessons that will continue to live long after you are gone. The messages and lessons a great legacy leaves behind will help future generations find success and face tough challenges in an increasingly vile world.

Wisdom you gain is priceless.

I consider leaving a great legacy of such importance I wrote a book on the subject. I wrote Leaving a Legacy: Ten Life Lessons I Wished I Had Learned Sooner for one purpose; helping others. In the book I share some of the most valuable life lessons I have learned through my many mistakes. Success normally doesn’t produce wisdom. Wisdom comes through life experiences involving failure and the lessons learned through those experiences. I make no claims of great wisdom, but I’m certain I have become wiser than I once was. Any wisdom I have gained has come from two sources; God and episodes of failure. Some of my greatest mistakes have produced the valuable life lessons I share in my book.

Overcoming past mistakes and gaining wisdom is wonderful, but it shouldn’t stop there. The purpose of gaining wisdom isn’t to help you succeed in life; though wisdom will certainly do that. The purpose of gaining wisdom is to share it with others to help them succeed. It is through helping others you will find the greatest satisfaction in life.

I encourage you to focus on making a difference in the lives of those around you. Don’t get so busy creating a life for yourself that you neglect creating a great legacy to leave to others. By leaving a great legacy, you will leave your friends and family a priceless gift that will last for generations.
