We Live in a Troubled World
This year Americans are overwhelmed by disturbing news from throughout the world. Reports of terrorist attacks in U.S. cities, escalating racial tensions, violence against law enforcement officers, and government corruption have loaded people with anxiety and stress. Listening to news reports from our national media leaves one wondering if any good news still exists. When a society is inundated with hatred, crime and corruption, people lose hope.
The world today is filled with hatred, violence, and corruption. In the Bible, Paul warned his friend Timothy that these days were coming. Take a look at what Paul told Timothy in 2nd Timothy 3; 1-5. Paul said, “You should know this, Timothy that in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!” (New Living Translation)
Paul’s warning to Timothy regarding the last days accurately describes the day in which we live. The part of Paul’s warning that stands out was when he said people would act religious, but reject the power that could make them Godly. The King James Version of the Bible uses the wording “having a form of godliness.” Consider the terrorist attacks by radicalized Islamic terrorists. The terrorists involved committed their atrocities against society in the name of their religion; Islam. They have a form of godliness; their religion, but they are far from godly. Do you realize how many wars throughout history were because of religion?
The Good News
The good news is you control your own destiny. Regardless of the world’s turmoil surrounding you, control of your happiness and destiny is in your hands. How you react to the turmoil and turbulence of life determines your success in life. There is still good in the world. You have to find it and focus on it. Take heart to what Paul said in Philippians 4:8. Paul said, “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” (New Living Translation)
Focusing on the positive won’t magically make horrific and chaotic occurrences in the world go away. But, refusing to focus on the negative will prevent your life from spiraling out of control. Your happiness will never exceed the quality of your thoughts. As a man thinks within his heart, so he is. Your thoughts play a vital role in your destiny.
The Best News
The best news is that God in Heaven loves you! John 3:16 in the Bible is the greatest news flash of all time. You have a God who loved you so much; he gave his only son to die for you. Jesus purchased your justification with God through his sacrifice on the cross over 2000 years ago. After Jesus died and rose from the dead, he appeared and spoke to his disciples several times. In Mark 16:15, Jesus told them to go into the entire world and preach the gospel to all creation. The New Testament was originally written in Greek. The original Greek word for gospel is the word evangelion, which means “good news.” It is from that original Greek word we get the words evangelism and evangelist. The good news Jesus wanted them to share was that he was alive and had conquered death, Hell, and the grave. Because Jesus lives, you have hope for the future.
God’s grace has paved the way for you to experience the abundant life Jesus spoke of in John 10:10. Grace paved the way, but you must accept God’s grace. If you allow the grace of God to transform your life, you will have overcoming power within you. Regardless of the turmoil and trouble surrounding you in the world, you will endure and overcome. In John 16:33 Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”(New International Version) Because Jesus overcame the world, if you have a personal relationship with him, you also can overcome the world! That’s great news!
You can Overcome
Because of God’s overcoming power within you, no weapons formed against you will prosper. No amount of turmoil in the world today can prevent you from reaching your God-given destiny. The key is allowing God to guide and direct your steps. By doing that, you will become everything God created you to be.
Not all the news today is disturbing. Regardless of how much disturbing news surrounds you, God is still on the throne and still in control. If we stay the course, we win. God has made us more than conquerors through his son Jesus Christ.
Take a moment and read chapter 24 of the Gospel of Matthew. It speaks in vivid detail about the things we are seeing and experiencing in the world today. That chapter tells us the ones who will be saved are the ones who endure to the end. Keep enduring and pressing on my friends. Don’t become discouraged. Embrace God’s grace and his plan for your life, and you will overcome whatever trials life throws your way.
