We see it all around us. We see it every day. We are surrounded with people every day that are searching for happiness, peace, and a sense of purpose in life. People search for happiness in their careers. People search for happiness in relationships. Countless numbers of people every year fail to find happiness in their lives, and they try to anesthetize themselves from the pain, heartache, and disappointments of life by seeking refuge in alcohol or drug abuse. We live in a world full of pain, discouraging news from the media, and injustices that occur on a nearly daily basis. At times it seems to be enough to make just about anyone want to give up.
Sadly, because of the stresses of life, and the daily challenges that for many seem to be insurmountable, thousands every year are drowning in an ocean of hopelessness and despair. Because they are overwhelmed with a sense of hopelessness, thousands that are unable to deal with the stress of everyday life choose to take their own life. According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that collects data about mortality in the U.S., in 2010 (the most recent year for which data are available), 38,364 suicides were reported. That figure makes suicide the 10th leading cause of death for Americans. In 2010, someone in the U.S. died as a result of suicide every 13.7 minutes.
Everybody longs for happiness. Whether they realize it or not, everybody is seeking a sense of purpose in life. People seek happiness through countless sources, whether it be their career, their relationships, their possessions and money, their habits…the list could go on and on. For all of us, our lives are like beautiful jigsaw puzzles that we are striving to complete. Can you remember the last time you spent hours, perhaps even days working to complete a large jigsaw puzzle? You were anticipating seeing the completed puzzle, and the beautiful picture that could be seen when the puzzle was complete. Completing the puzzle gives you a sense of achievement. We all want to complete the puzzles of our lives so that we can see the beautiful pictures of joy, happiness, contentment, and personal fulfillment when the puzzle is completed. Have you ever worked on a jigsaw puzzle only to find that when you got to the very end, you were missing one piece? That is so frustrating!
The fact that countless numbers of people fail to realize is that no matter what we choose to use in an attempt to fill the void or emptiness that we feel in our lives, nothing in this world will ever truly satisfy. Regardless of what things we add to our life, there is always a missing piece to the puzzle of our life. You can have a great career, but it will not bring you endless peace. You can have enormous wealth, but money won’t buy happiness. There is only one thing that will ever make our lives complete, and will prove to be the piece that will complete the puzzle of our life, and that is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The Bible talks about being able to have the peace of God that passes all understanding, and that type of peace is only available through Jesus Christ. No matter what storms life may bring your way, or what trials that you face, you can have a peace that comes from God that gives you the assurance that you are going to be make it. When you have this kind of peace, the world around you may not understand how you can be happy in the midst of such turmoil. What they don’t realize is that your peace doesn’t come from anything in this world. It comes from the knowledge that you have Christ as your provider. In the Bible, there is a scripture in the book of Proverbs that says that there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother. That friend is Jesus Christ. No matter what you face or what life brings your way, He will never leave you or forsake you.
Are you feeling like your life is missing a sense of direction and purpose? Do you feel like regardless of what you do, happiness and peace is eluding you? Perhaps you have overlooked the missing puzzle piece to the puzzle of your life. If you want to complete your puzzle so that you can see the beautiful thing that your life can become, you have to plug in that final missing piece. That piece is Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “I am come that you may have life, and have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10) Allow Jesus to fill that empty place in the puzzle of your life. There is no other puzzle piece that this world has to offer that will fit. Jesus will complete your puzzle.
